Encourage players to call Referees by their name - not 'Hey Ref!' Referees and Assistant Referees have the power to enhance the quality of a game. Their role is difficult, as they need to make instant decisions during games played at an increasingly high speed. Mistakes are inevitable but not intentional, and may be reduced if they receive more support from coaches and management of both teams.
Don't make a referee's job harder by alienating him!
Genuine support of their role and appreciation of the pressure they experience is rare. Players continually question decisions and supporters chant abuse. Referees have to spend the hour post match defending decisions, avoiding verbal abuse from supporters, and alienation from both teams.
